K'uei: A SYZYGY
Instrumentation: flute, viola, percussion (Mark Tree, cabasa, vibraphone) K’uei: A SYZYGY was developed with a choreographer as an exploration into opposing polarities and the eventual creation of synthesis. “K’uei” is the hexagram for Opposition in the I Ching. This finely crafted work is a feature piece for the viola, exploring the full range of the instrument from its most rich and expressive lows to angular reaches of the high end. The viola’s slow, pensive character is opposed by the fleeting gestures of the flute. Eventually they change places, mediated by the percussion, which takes on qualities of both as the piece gradually unfolds, bursts open, then comes to rest.
